With the new Olympic cycle beginning and culminating at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, the International Judo Federation continues its development around the world. Among the major sporting events highly anticipated over the next four years, there will be the world championships, the flagship event of the judo community and the IJF.
The favorites had contrasting destinies throughout the day. Among the smiling destinies, that of Michael Korrel (NED), number one seed, who managed to avoid all the traps to reach another final on the World Judo Tour, his ninth in fact. At the very end of the competition, it was the Netherlands who finished in first place, ahead of France and Germany, with the Emirates following closely behind, while the four countries each won two titles.
The heavyweight final for men +100kg delivered a gold medal for Valerii Endovitskii who faced Ushangi Kokaruri. Despite the weight difference it is Endovitskii who took the advantage with a first waza-ari and a conclusion on the ground for ippon. Gold medal goes to Valerii Endovitskii.
15 years, that's starting to count. It was in fact from 2009, at the very beginning of the World Judo Tour adventure, that Abu Dhabi hosted its first tournament on the world circuit. Since then, the grand slams have followed one another at a steady pace, while other major international competitions have taken place here, including the junior, veteran and kata world championships and last May the senior world championships. This was the last major competition before the Paris Olympic Games. Now a new generation will stand up.
Anna Monta Olek's (GER) season was great and clearly this new cycle is starting under the best auspices. Winner of the Prague European Open 2024 in September for her restart after the Paris Olympic Games break, she was a finalist in Kazakhstan in May, third in Baku and had won the grand prix in Portugal and Upper Austria earlier this year. This time she went for a gold medal at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam.
In the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam final for men U90kg, both judoka delivered a serious and enjoyable contest. In the end, is Mansur Lorsanov who produced the right effort at the right moment with a massive tsuri-goshi for ippon. Gold medal for Mansur Lorsanov.
<p>The presence of major champions has become a tradition at the Aurel Cîmpeanu Memorial International Judo Tournament in Romania. The second day of the European Cup in Malaga saw a wide range of nations standing atop the podium, with some surprising and impressive performances. In the men's -81kg category, Jan Svoboda from the Czech Republic secured the gold medal, defeating Eetu Ihanamaki from Finland in a closely contested final. The bronze medals went to Spain’s Mamoudou Ba and Koen Heg of the Netherlands.
The first day of the European Cup in Malaga delivered a thrilling display of judo action, with 393 athletes competing across seven weight categories. The southern Spanish city welcomed 251 men and 142 women to battle for glory in the prestigious tournament's twelfth edition. Spain’s judoka shone on home soil, while international competitors from across Europe and beyond made their mark.
The first known final of the day of the Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi was the U70 kg between the two Dutch judoka Margit De Voogd and Hilde Jager. Already on the podium in Tashkent this season, De Voogd thus offered herself a medal guarantee and what's more is that it would be gold or silver, her best result to date no matter what.
